Why you can't stick to your diet 🥸

mindset Jul 05, 2022

Ok. Let’s start unpacking this.

There are a lot of possibilities here.

Let’s start with defining “your diet”.

Many people think that dieting is hard because they’ve tried to cut out full food groups that they love (this is madness) or they’re following some weird non-specific food rules (“syns”), or they’ve tried to stick to a level of calories that is simply way too little for their body and activity levels.

But dieting doesn’t have to be hard. I explained in my email on Monday how to get into a calorie deficit.

So what if you understand all that but still struggle to actually stick to the plan?

I’m not going to lie - there needs to be some discipline here. It might mean choosing the side salad instead of chips. It might mean swapping your lattes for americanos.

But it shouldn’t take away from your life experiences, if you plan and execute properly.

But why are you struggling to do that?

If you are confident that you are eating “enough” and still feel like you lack the discipline/motivation needed, maybe ask yourself - is this really your priority in your life right now?

What are your top values?

If you think that life is too short to say no to drinks with friends every weekend, that’s graaaaand. But you have to acknowledge your health will suffer, and it will be difficult to stay in a consistent calorie deficit.

Maybe it is really important to you to improve your health or change your body shape, but you still want to be able to go out and enjoy yourself.

This is possible, but it will take some planning and some sacrifices. Maybe you will go out drinking once a month or only on special occasions. Or maybe you will go out every weekend but you will spend time planning your nutrition for the week so that you are still in a calorie deficit, but over a longer period.

Remember years ago, all the fitness influencers would post pictures of their body with a caption like “how bad do you want it?” (I’m defo guilty…).

But what I have since learned is that it’s ok to not really want it that bad.

Yes, it’s great feeling lean, but I like to educate people on what it takes, and let them decide how far they want to push it.

Sometimes I look at pictures of when I was in my best shape, in my opinion, in 2018. And that was when I stayed in Ireland for the summer. I trained so hard at CrossFit all summer.

But I’m not willing to do that any more.

And that’s ok.

I’m not frustrated with what my body looks now. I’m accepting that I will have more bodyfat because of my current environment and life choices.

If you are frustrated with how you feel in your body, but can’t seem to actually plan and execute a successful diet, then maybe you need support on this journey.
